Yoga For Holiday Travellers

It can be hard to squeeze in time for fitness during your holiday travels, but just because you’re on vacation doesn’t mean your workout regimen has to stop. Yoga is a great way to stay in shape during your travels. And since it also has mental and spiritual benefits, practicing yoga can even improve your travelling experience.

Yoga is also a very convenient workout to do while travelling. You can reap the benefits of a great workout by just doing a 15-30 minute routine. It also doesn’t require you to take up a lot of space, so you can do your workout in the comfort of your hotel room.

Here are some yoga poses you can perform while you’re on vacation:

  1. Half downward-facing dog pose

This pose helps ease the tightness in your calves, hamstrings and back muscles. Start by standing about 3 feet from a wall, with your feet directly under your hips. Then press your hands into the wall so that your spine is in a neutral position. Keeping your hands and feet shoulder-width apart, bend forward from your hips. Make sure to keep your torso almost parallel to the floor.

  1. Knee bending (Janu Naman)

This yoga pose is great for releasing tension that accumulates at the hips, knees and ankles from walking for long periods. Stand with one hand against the wall. Keeping your posture straight, bend your right leg at the knee to form a right angle. Point your toe downwards to get a better workout. After that, rotate your ankle in a clockwise direction, then repeat in a counter-clockwise direction.

  1. Standing forward stretch (Uttanasana)

If you’re experiencing tension on your upper back, this pose can help relieve the stress. From a standing position, raise both arms above your head and inhale. Then exhale as you reach both hands to the ground. Relax your neck and arms and keep your breathing normal.

  1. Abdominal Twist (Kati Chakrasana)

Apart from promoting overall flexibility, this pose soothes your digestive track and can relieve constipation. Stand up with your leg slightly apart, then hug yourself. Keep your spine straight and inhale. Then exhale, then twist your body to the right, looking over right shoulder. Inhale while returning to the standing position, and repeat with the left side.

  1. Swaying Palm Tree (Trikaya tadasana)

If you’re feeling sluggish or stressed, try this pose to relieve the tension. Stand with your feet slightly apart. Inhale, then raise your hands over your head, keeping your fingers interlocked and turned outwards. Stretch yourself fully in this position. Exhale, then tilt to one side as far as comfortably possible. Inhale, then return to standing position. Repeat to the other side, then do at least ten rounds.
